June 28, 2011 Delray Beach, FL – The Harrigan Foundation offers an intensive training seminar this August covering the Connecticut Center for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) model for recovery coaching roles and responsibilities.  Recovery Coach Academy (RCA) candidates are those individuals who are currently working in the addiction field and possess a desire to explore a non-clinical method of service.

Through participating in this peer-based program, addiction professionals increase their knowledge and expertise by learning how to improve engagement and retention techniques for individuals seeking addiction treatment services.

The CCAR model was developed in 2007.  Since that time, almost 600 individuals around the country have received this type of training.  The Harrigan Foundation’s dedication to providing innovative addiction treatment research and training methodologies makes them the first provider for this particular model in the state of Florida.

A not for profit organization developed to create opportunities for those in financial need of addiction treatment and housing, The Harrigan Foundation relentlessly develops cutting edge substance abuse and mental health educational programs.

RCA is a one week training opportunity designed for anyone interested in serving as a coach.  RCA offers a comprehensive overview of the purpose and roles of coaching while providing participants with the tools and resources necessary for providing support services.

A Recovery Coach is…

anyone interested in transmitting a life of sobriety by becoming a personal mentor for individuals seeking freedom from substance abuse, or those in early sobriety who may need assistance removing the barriers and obstacles they may encounter in the rehabilitation process.

Through the RCA, individuals will learn the roles associated with coaching: role model and mentor, motivator and cheerleader, ally and confident, problem solver, truth teller, advocate, community organizer, lifestyle consultant, friend, companion and equal.  Participants also learn the importance of what a Coach is not: a sponsor, counselor, doctor or priest.

RCA Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the roles and functions of a coach
  • List the components, core values and guiding principles of a life of sobriety
  • Build skills to enhance relationships
  • Describe stages of change and how to achieve them
  • Discuss co-occurring disorders and medicated assisted sobriety
  • Participate in wellness planning
  • Address ethical issues
  • Practice newly acquired skills

RC’s are not clinical service providers.  They do, however work with people experiencing challenging emotional and physical states.  Because of this, RCA provides students with a basic understanding of substance abuse and mental health disorders, crisis intervention and how to respond in crisis situations.  Motivational enhancement strategies, skills on effective communication, cultural competency, action planning, and ethics are also provided.

Training of Trainers (TOT)

For those interested in becoming trainers, RCA offers a concurrent Training-of-Trainers seminar.  This portion of the course will be offered in an additional two hours following each training day.  This program is designed to familiarize future RC Trainers with the full curriculum and to learn the most beneficial ways of delivering the RCA.  Those attending the TOT must be seasoned trainers and have extensive knowledge of addiction and sobriety.
