After reality TV star Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino spent a short period in rehab back in 2012, he says he has spent a year as part of the recovery community and is currently celebrating 8 months clean and sober. Despite a few bumps in the road due to his well-publicized party life-style, he says he has been able to put himself on the right track. Although Sorrentino may still see assault charges against him, which might be downgraded pending the successful completion of anger management counseling.
Anger Management
Richard Thompson, Middletown municipal court judge overseeing the case against Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino, adjourned the case for 12 weeks after a brief appearance by the infamous party animal and former cast member of MTV’s hit series Jersey Shore, in court this past Monday morning. Sorrentino was joined by his brother, who he is accused of assaulting, and the rest of his family in the courtroom.
Lucky for Sorrentino his situation could get a little better given his commitment to reform. The charges against him could possibly be amended to a lesser municipal offense equivalent to a mere noise complaint, and even less than the disorderly person’s offense he also faced. All the changes to his legal troubles would take effect if an anger management counseling program is successfully completed. Michael Sorrentino’s attorney Edward Fradkin of Freehold has apparently been working on this deal and has expressed “The Situations” case to the press. The anger management counseling will be conducted by a private therapist who will meet with Michael Sorrentino over the course of 12 weeks, after which he shall report back to the court, Fradkin said.
“The Situations” Situation
The 32 year old Michael Sorrentino was arrested at the Boca Tanning Club, a business he and his family own on July 15th, ironically the date his new show was set to premiere, and was later released after posting $500 bail, according to police.
While the authorities have declined to identify whom Sorrentino had gotten into the dispute with, the celebrity gossip website TMZ had reported that the fight was between Sorrentino and his brother, Frank. The Jersey Shore star apparently had gotten into an intense Twitter banter with his brother Frank around the time of the altercation, which ultimately resulted in both brothers disclosing the phone numbers of the other, apparently out of spite. When reached for comment his attorney stated,
“We worked it out today. Ultimately, this is a squabble between brothers,” Fradkin said. “His brother is here and his sister is here.”
While at the brief court hearing, Frank Sorrentino and his sister, Melissa, were identified as witnesses by Edward Fradkin when he asked the judge for time to conduct discovery. Last month, four employees of the Middletown tanning salon filed a police report saying their paychecks had bounced. Sorrentino claims that the incident was an innocent error caused when the salon changed payroll companies, and that each employee was compensated for the miscalculation. But township Police Lt. Steve Dollinger said employee pay had been withheld for “an extended period of time” when his department became involved.
“The Situations” Sobriety
Sorrentino now has a new reality show The Sorrentinos starring him to be airing soon and covering his progress. The show is set to primarily focus on Michael’s difficulty coping with his fame and his continued recovery from addiction to painkillers. Sorrentino and members of his family, including mom, Linda, sister, Melissa, and brothers, Frank and Marc, recently filmed episodes of the reality series at the salon. It debuted on July 15th on TVGN, formerly the TV Guide Network.
“When I had gotten out of Jersey Shore, I had a year to settle down and find out who I was, and I wasn’t in the best shape,” Sorrentino tells PEOPLE magazine. “I had to rebuild myself inside and out.”
Michael says he is gaining control of an addiction to prescription medication as well as other drugs and alcohol. Any good recovering addict can tell you though that thinking you have control is not the best way to look at it, it is more of how you carry yourself. And if he is finding himself in fights he may want to take advantage of this opportunity to re-evaluate his self-control.
“Because of the parties and the traveling … the percentage on recovery is not the best,” he confessed when recently interviewed by PEOPLE magazine, “It was extremely hard and it took every ounce of effort for me, and I just put my head down and kept moving forward.”
Another question one could pose is that with it being said that Michael spent a year in recovery and has just recently celebrated 8 months of sobriety; does this conclude that he was tapering off a suboxone style detox, or was it just a few months before Sorrentino decided to give up the party? Some may even ask if he continues to soak up as much spot light as he can while getting into altercations with his family and trouble with the police, how much peace and clarity will he get out of his sobriety, and how long will it last?
