Looking at photos of Joey Kovar and knowing that he is no longer amongst us is frustrating. It’s frustrating to me because he was only 29 years old and had battled addiction and living a life of sobriety.

News outlets are reporting that Joey Kovar passed away on Friday, August 17th, 2012 at a friends apartment in Chicago. The cause of his death is unknown.

Joey who claimed on The Real World: Hollywood that from the age of two he was physically beaten repeatedly, had anger and substance abuse problems. Joey started using steroids at age 19 then added other drugs such as ecstasy, alcohol, cocaine and methamphetamine.

“I am a binger,” he told the SouthtownStar during a period in which he claimed to be clean and sober. When “normal people go out,” he went on, “they know when to stop. My problem is I can’t stop.”

Due to his past drug use some are claiming that he passed away of an overdose from cocaine while others, like his friend and business associate, Jared Degado, is claiming it was more likely accidental. Jared does not deny Joey’s past drug use but quickly comes to his defense claiming he no longer used and was only taking prescriptions for his Anxiety and ADHD.  His brother David Kovar also claimed that Joey was clean 6 months and that “everyone is in shock right now. He seemed fine, he was happier and he was doing better,” he said. Authorities also reported no signs of foul play after having discovered his body last Friday in a friend’s apartment.

However, the autopsy report is currently inconclusive until the toxicology reports come back and CBS is reporting that a “rep told the site that the friend found Kovak with blood coming out of his ears and nose”. As of right now no one really knows what happened to Joey Kovar. Did he indeed relapse and overdose? Or was this an accidental overdose due to medications he was on? I guess we’ll have to wait for the toxicology report.

Kovar was introduced to America in 2008 on the reality show The Real World: Hollywood in which his addiction became a focal point in the show’s plot and he ended up leaving the show and entering rehab for 30 days. He would continue to battle his addiction, and later appear on Celebrity Rehab with Dr.Drew which aired in 2010 and posed nude for PlayGirl.
