I want to go to rehab

I want to go to rehab. Where do I start?

The circumstances that lead us all to begin searching for rehab can be scary, frightening and overwhelming. The thought of not only going to rehab but finding the right one in a sea of different drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers that are guaranteeing they are the best may leave you with more questions than answers.

The first of these being, where do I start?

1. Insurance

The first thing you want to do is to check with your insurance (if you have it). Your insurance coverage will be the deciding factor in what rehab you go to. If you can’t afford it, then of course you won’t be going. Calling your insurance company to see what rehabs are available to you is a fantastic place to get started so you don’t spend your time calling rehabs that don’t take your insurance or that you cannot afford.

2. Needs

After you’ve called your insurance you’ll want to know what your specific needs are. Is it important to you that the treatment center be holistic or that they offer 12 steps? Perhaps this is your 2nd or 3rd time going to rehab and you want to make sure the treatment center has specific treatments like group therapy, dual diagnosis and trauma resolution before you agree to go.

Depending on whether or not you are looking for rehabs for a family member or for yourself these are good ideas to have as you start looking to go to rehab. This is because most rehabs will tell you they are exactly what you need when that is not really the case. You want to have an idea of what you want and settle for no less. Of course you also want it to be affordable and choosing the most affordable and best rehab out there can be difficult. This is why calling your insurance company before you even begin calling rehabs is a smart idea. Then you can narrow the sea of drug rehabs down into what you can afford and then you can narrow them down even farther depending on what you want out of it.

Have a list of questions for the rehab you are calling.

  • Do they provide detox?
  • Do they provide family visitation?
  • Is there an outpatient program?
  • What do I need to bring with me to drug and alcohol rehab?
  • How big is the rehabilitation center?
  • What do you have to pay for out of pocket and what is covered as part of the payment for treatment?

These are all important questions to ask as you get started to go to rehab.

With all of these things in mind you are well on your way to rehab and you will find yourself with a good head start in this troubling and hard time. It can be difficult to deal with and also scary to realize you or your loved one has to go to rehab because of a drug or alcohol problem. It doesn’t have to be any more difficult and overwhelming though. Finding the right rehab can be fairly simple if you take these simple measures to get yourself started. Next thing you know you or your loved one will be on their way to a long, healthy and happy life.
