Most holidays are a long weekend of an excuse for people to drink. But if you aren’t drinking this Labor Day or you are in recovery, alcohol is not going to be part of your holiday. If this is you, you may be wondering what is there to do on Labor Day without alcohol? The answer to your question actually is pretty easy, everything! You can do anything you love to do on Labor Day, just do it without drinking. As alcoholics and addicts we make alcohol a bigger deal than it needs to be. You can have just as good of a time without the booze as you thought or imagine you can with it.
Here is how to have a real good time on Labor Day without alcohol:
Throw a BBQ!
Or any kind of food-oriented kind of get-together will work! If there is one thing we all like to do on holidays more than drink, it is eat. Get your friends and family together and hang in the backyard, porch, or balcony. Make it a potluck and enjoy a huge variety of food like corn on the cob, cheeseburgers, and fruit salad. Maybe even some pie! This can also be the perfect opportunity to use the pool with some friends!
Have a picnic-in the park!
There is nothing more that screams summer than a picnic. Whether it is sandwiches and lemonade or the sunshine overhead, picnics represent everything about summer. You could even take the picnic to the beach if it isn’t too windy. If you live near or are visiting an area with a park, use it! There are many areas that come equipped with everything you need for a picnic including shady areas, grills, tables, playgrounds, dog parks etc.
Visit a theme park or water park!
Rides, slides, and unhealthy snacks are everyone’s favorite things. Many water parks will begin to close gradually throughout the fall so this may be the last chance to get to one. Although, we do live in South Florida, but this is for anyone who doesn’t. There are tons of theme parks in every state and make for a fun filled, day long adventure that will wear you out and it definitely won’t take any alcohol to have fun.
Go for a bike ride!
If you are into riding bikes and have friends who are also into it, taking a nice late afternoon bike ride through your city is a great Labor Day activity. For instance, a bike ride would be perfect along A1A if you are living in South Florida, probably as it starts to cool off late in the afternoon. If you don’t have a bike, rent one! Enjoy the ocean breeze, stop and sit on the beach a little while, get some ice cream and be on your merry “alcohol free” way.
Go for a boat ride!
If you are lucky enough to live next to the coast then go for a boat ride. After summer ends the winds begin to pick up and it can be touch-and-go on whether or not you will be able to safely get off the dock. Right now during the summer time it tends to be calm and you can get out and explore the big ocean. If you don’t want to do that you could maybe spend the day paddle boarding or diving in the canals.
Also if you check online for local Labor Day events you will find tons of them. Many cities across the country have festivals, music fests, food fests and so much more going on Labor Day weekend. Figure out what the dates are for your city and you already have something great lined up for your weekend that is fun to do without alcohol.
