What is Meth?
Meth is the shortened name for methamphetamine, also referred to as crank, ice, and crystal, among other nicknames. This powerful drug typically comes in pill or powder form, and it is usually smoked, swallowed, or inhaled. Sometimes it is injected as well. Because meth is “cooked,” or prepared from ingredients that are found in cold medicines, it is easy to get, making it a very popular drug. Although meth is fairly simple to make, the process itself is dangerous, adding another layer to the problems that are associated with this drug.
Crystal Meth Addiction and Abuse
Meth is one of the more addictive drugs, and has a very short high, making the user feel great and then crash quickly. This cycle of drug abuse happens repeatedly, destroying the wiring in the pleasure center of the brain. This makes treatment challenging, as the drug becomes the only way for the person to feel good until they can remain sober for a period of time and treat the addiction.
Crystal meth addiction/abuse happens rapidly, as the drug makes the brain release dopamine in large amounts, making the user feel wonderful—at first. Since meth is a stimulant, over time the cycle of getting high and crashing becomes a lifestyle, which is hard to maintain and often causes serious depression.
Symptoms of meth addiction can include:
- Serious teeth and mouth problems
- Anxiety
- Increases in blood pressure
- Weight loss
- Itchiness
- Paranoia
Meth can also cause various physical problems as a result of what it is cut with or how the body’s systems react to the stimulant. The brain can be damaged from long-term use.
