Studies show that the best treatment outcomes occur when traditional 12-step based treatment is combined with newer, more modern methods. This is why Palm Partners incorporates the AA principals into its model for recovery. Simply speaking, it works.

Treatment centers, like Palm Partners, that introduce clients to the AA principals and get them involved in the fellowship have a higher success rate. In fact Palm Partners has a special psycho-educational group class, “12 step integration”, which introduces the 12 steps and provides lessons to ingrain the principles into clients’ daily lives. When it comes to recovery, treatment can only go so far so from the first day our clients arrive the 12 steps are being seeded into their treatment so once they leave they’ll feel empowered to look for outside meetings to attend. The most important work comes after you leave an inpatient program. 12-step programs fuel the cycle of recovery and pick up where treatment left off to pave the way towards a healthy, sober life. Getting involved in the fellowship ensures that you will be surrounded by others in recovery, and this also contributes to success rate.

AA works because it treats all facets of the disease. Addiction is a three-fold disease. It is a spiritual malady, a physical allergy, and a mental obsession. A model for recovery that incorporates the AA principals treats the whole person- spiritual, physical, and mental.

Treating the physical aspect of addiction is very important, obviously. This is the quantifiable aspect of addiction. You can observe a person’s physical symptoms when they are withdrawing from a substance. You can give them medications to relieve the discomfort. However, after 10 days, a person’s body is no longer dependent on the substance. If this were the only aspect of drug addiction, then anyone who has been through detox could stay sober forever. Rarely is this the case. Only when a person’s body and mind are free from drug addiction can you begin to treat the mental and spiritual portions of the disease.

The psychological aspect of the disease is addressed in treatment. You attend therapy to deal with the causes of the alcohol or drug addiction. This alone is not sufficient to lift the mental obsession, however. In order to truly be free of the mental obsession with drugs and alcohol, you must treat the spiritual malady. And this is the basis of a model for recovery based on AA principals-the idea that everything is connected. Through twelve steps and a relationship with a higher power, you will truly be able to conquer all aspects of the disease of addiction.

For 75 years, once hopeless drug addicts and alcoholics have found redemption in the AA principals. No one really knows how it works, but in the 75 years since Bill Wilson founded the program, experts have yet to design a program that works better, despite the wealth of knowledge we have amassed in subjects like psychology, medicine, and human behavior. While Palm Partners does incorporate more modern methods into its program of recovery, like holistic medicine and hypnotherapy, their program is still, at its core, based on AA principals.

If you or someone you know needs drug or alcohol treatment or is looking for a program based on AA principals, call us at (877) 711-HOPE (4673) or visit us online at www.palmpartners.com.
