Alcohol Addiction. What Do You Think About All Day Long?
“A man is what he thinks about all day long” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
What do you think about all day long? I know for me with alcohol addiction, all I thought about all day long was alcohol. That is why I would describe myself as an alcoholic. It was what gave me an identity. My name is Rhea and I am an alcoholic. I am what I thought about all day long. Alcohol addiction can be arrested though and while you will always be an alcoholic you can be recovered from alcohol addiction, the thoughts therefore do not have to be who you are any longer. You can recover.
Alcohol addiction is so far from a pleasant state of mind. That reminds me to say alcohol addiction is a state of mind, and it is a state of body and a state of soul. It all begins in the mind though. Just as Ralph Waldo Emerson said “A man is what he thinks…”- the mind.
The mind rules over an alcohol addiction within a person. The body of someone with an alcohol addiction doesn’t come into play if the person is remaining abstinent. It’s the mind of someone with an alcohol addiction that tells them to take that first drink, bringing into play the body and soul.
If someone with an alcohol addiction could arrest their mind to no longer crave alcohol there wouldn’t be an issue. This is a harder feat than could be imagined and even if recovered from alcohol addiction it can return if the person is not doing the right things on a daily basis.
This is why treatment for alcohol addiction and even a 12 step program are essential to thelivelihood of recovery. It helps manage the thoughts about drinking and helps you to start taking actions that change those thoughts so you no longer have to be defined by your alcohol addiction.
If you are no longer defined by your alcohol addiction you can choose how you define yourself. You can be whatever you want to be. Just think it and it shall be. I know this to be true for myself. This is why recovery, even though it seems difficult is one of the most amazing things to experience. To have an alcohol addiction and recover from it gives you something most people dont have and thats an awareness and ability to take action with your thoughts. What a gift! Whatever you think you can become. Alcohol addiction is scary and hard but it gives you this amazing blessing if you reach and out and take it. It is already yours, you just have to choose to have it.
So stop thinking about your alcohol addiction and start thinking about something positive in your life. Start thinking about recovery. Start to imagine a world beyond your wildest dreams and you can have it. I guarantee it. Thoughts and action can take any person including someone with an alcohol addiction and put them in a place where the world is at their fingertips.
