Everyone loves a song that they can relate to; and being in recovery there are a lot of songs out there from musicians who struggled with addiction. Below I’ve listed what I think to be the 12 best songs about recovery and the video link and description to go with each song.

The 12 Best Songs About Recovery:

1. Sober by Pink

Pink wrote the song at a party held at her home, where everyone was drunk or drinking except for her. She wanted them all to leave and she went to the beach and had a line in her head saying “How do I feel so good sober?” Ultimately it had zero to do with alcohol but with identities. Pink says it is one of the darkest from that album and is really, really beautiful and one of her favorites.

2. Not Afraid by Eminem

The song was written and produced by Eminem, Boi-1da, Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett; keyboardist Luis Resto was also credited with songwriting recognition. According to Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg and music critics, “Not Afraid” transmits an affirmative message and portrays Eminem’s change in direction from drugs and violence.

3. It’s Been Awhile by Staind

In “It’s Been Awhile”, singer Aaron Lewis sings of somebody who takes stock of his life. He makes mentions to his former drug addiction problem and unsuccessful relationships. Lewis references his father, though he believes he has only himself to hold responsible for his problems.

4. Life is Beautiful by Sixx AM

“Life Is Beautiful” is about Sixx’s former drug addiction, the problems he faced while addicted, and his awareness that “Life Is Beautiful.” Part of the chorus of the song, “Will you swear on your life, that no one will cry at my funeral”, is a quote from Sixx’s past roommate and co-lead guitarist from Ratt, Robbin Crosby. Crosby died from a heroin overdose in 2002.

5. Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Singer Anthony Kiedis wrote the lyrics to express a feeling of isolation and depression, and to reflect on narcotics and their influence on his life. Kiedis originally did not feel “Under the Bridge” would fit into the Chili Peppers’ collection and was hesitant to show it to his band mates until producer Rick Rubin implored him to do so. The rest of the band was interested in the lyrics and wrote the music for the song.

6. Jane says by Jane’s Addiction

The name refers to lead singer Perry Farrell’s ex-housemate, Jane Bainter, who was the muse, inspiration, and where they got the name of the band. The song conveys drug references such as “kick” (stop using). The fourth verse contains a mention of St. Andrews Place in Los Angeles, CA.

7. High Cost of Living by Jamey Johnson

This was the album’s second single and is a mid-tempo in which the male storyteller reminiscences sufferings in his life, such as struggling with addiction. He uses the line “The high cost of livin’ ain’t nothin’ like the cost of livin’ high” to describe the toll that the vices have had on his life.

8. I Hate Everything About You by Three Days Grace

This song was said to be about hating an ex-girlfriend but has also been thought to be about addiction. I put this one on here because for me, when I listen to the lyrics and hear this song all I think about it my drug of choice (or no choice) and my feelings towards it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but mine is that this is about struggling with addiction.

9. Your Glass House by Atmosphere

This song talks about waking up from a hangover and that feeling of waking up the next day after a long night of drinking. It talks about waking up to a familiar feeling in an unfamiliar place which basically describes my alcohol use and drinking career.

10. Starting Over by Macklemore

This song is about recovering addict and rapper Macklemore and how he had to start over after having 3 years of sobriety and relapsing. It is a powerful message and about starting your recovery journey over and humbling yourself, again.

11. If the Brakeman Turns my Way by Bright Eyes

The lead singer of Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst, sings in most of his songs about his struggles with addiction and different stories about cocaine, drinking and drug use. This song is about recovery and learning to control what you can and to accept what you can’t.

12. Young Homie by Chris Rene

In this song, he clearly speaks about being 9 months sober and talking to a young homie about what drugs he is doing and telling him that life is too short to live that way.
