5 Advantages to Going to Rehab

Going to meetings is definitely what keeps me sober, but what are the advantages for going to Rehab? What are the differences between starting your journey of recovery with Rehab and starting with just going to meetings? From my own experience, going to Rehab helped me tremendously in staying sober.

5 Advantages to Going to Rehab: Structure

When I was out there using drugs and alcohol, my life had absolutely no structure. I didn’t even know what it meant to live a life with structure. When I went into treatment I got on a good sleeping schedule (eventually), had my days planned out and was constantly kept busy. They gave us very little free time, which helped me to not sit around and think about drinking or drugging.

5 Advantages to Going to Rehab: Support

Not only is there technicians there to supervise all the time, but you have 24/7 contact with other alcoholics and addicts. When I was in rehab, these people became my support system and a lot of them remain my supports today. My idea of what a friend was completely changed. The technicians also truly care about your well-being and making sure you do the right things, as do the therapists.

5 Advantages to Going to Rehab: Focus on yourself

This is a very selfless program, but in the beginning we need time to focus on ourselves without distraction. You are able to figure out your issues and work on them with people there to help you. You don’t have the temptation of others or of drugs and alcohol around you so can work on yourself.

5 Advantages to Going to Rehab: Therapy

Therapy goes along with focusing on you. You have the opportunity to meet with a therapist and talk about your problems and what is going on with you. You are encouraged to write about it and talk in group with others about it as well. You and your therapist can make a treatment plan for you to work on your recovery.

5 Advantages to Going to Rehab: Tools on How to Stay Sober

In treatment, the most important thing they did for me was take me to meetings outside of the treatment center. You are able to find a sponsor and are given the tools you need to stay sober. The rehab facility I went to encouraged us to get a sponsor, start our steps and get connected with people in the rooms before we leave.

With all of this being said, it is possible to get sober without going to treatment. It’s all about being willing and how bad you want it. Rehab is a great way to get introduced into the world of recovery, though. It helps you sober up physically, mentally and emotionally and gives you a 30 day (or more) get away from everything. For me, I needed to be put in a safe and secure environment to get sober otherwise I might not be sober today!
