Going to meetings is one of the most important parts of staying sober. They help us be around other people who are dealing with some of the same problems as us and help us to get out of ourselves for an hour. There are many different ways to tell that you need a meeting, but here are just a few that I came up with. You might need a meeting if…:
Your boyfriend/girlfriend is your sponsor. (and they think you need a meeting)
You read an article about the dangers of using Krokodil and still think you would have used it in your addiction. (but I heard the high is totally worth it)
You’re going through your menstrual cycle, period. (no pun intended)
You’re annoyed by everything you read on Facebook. (only your rants are acceptable)
Your dog is sick and was prescribed medication and you google it to see if it can get you high. (just curious, no big deal)
You think being on suboxone means you’re sober. (it keeps me away from drugs)
You come home and yell at your dog for getting all excited to see you. (seriously, calm down)
Your boyfriend/girlfriend with 30 days relapses and you have absolutely no idea why. (he/she just got out of rehab)
You can’t remember the last time you helped a newcomer. (newcomers never help me with anything, either)
You are seriously pissed off when you see happy people. (they need to get over themselves)
You might need a meeting if you can’t remember the last time you were at a meeting. (when you picked up your last medallion?)
You’re screaming and cursing at other cars in traffic. (and possibly throwing things)
You break down crying in the middle of the grocery store because they have no cold Red Bulls. (or monsters)
You’re hanging out in bars but not drinking. (you just love the atmosphere of it all)
You think being of service is being a designated driver for your normal friends. (they finally trust you with their keys again)
Your sponsee goes to more meetings than you. (and asks you where you’ve been)
Your home group members have been calling you asking where you’ve been. (why do all of these people keep bothering me)
You might need a meeting if you hear rumors that you relapsed. (and actually have to think about it for a moment)
You are always taking the inventory of others and never yourself. (my friend totally needs more meetings)
You’re considering non-alcoholic beer or the marijuana maintenance plan. (but just on the weekends, of course)
You think working in treatment will keep you sober. (that’s working a program, right?)
You think getting a tattoo of the serenity prayer is more important than going to a meeting. (or getting a tan, or going to the gym…)
You show up for the meeting after the meeting only. (at least I showed up)
And last but not least, you don’t want to go to a meeting! (you’re fine, you just went to one like 3 weeks ago in an online chat room)
You might need a meeting if you’re reading this wondering if any of this applies to you; go to a meeting! Even if you don’t feel like going you know you always feel better afterwards, so go help someone!
