Stuff People in Delray Say

So, Delray is an incestuous recovery scene, where everybody knows everybody else or, at least can play their own version of “Six Degrees of Bacon” within three degrees. As far as stuff people in Delray say, any bit of gossipy gooeyness is bound to be heard within earshot of the Ave.

“Did you hear that so-and-so relapsed?” – gossip, of course

“Oh, you’re in NA?” – said with disdain, or alternatively “No answers for NA”

“You know you’re gonna relapse, right?” – what people say when you tell them you’re planning a trip back home or anything really that they might be jealous of

“How many sponsees do you have?” – like a comparison or competition

“My girlfriend/boyfriend cheated on me with my sponsee” – not gonna touch this one; it’s self-explanatory

“Going to Spot is sooo lame” – 10 minutes later…at Spot

Kava isn’t a relapse; it’s natural” – yeah, so is pot and pot is still a relapse

“Kratom isn’t a relapse” – just like Kava, Kratom is a mood or mind-altering drug so, natural or not, it’s considered breaking sobriety to do Kratom

“We were in treatment together and I think he/she is the one” – basically the same thing as a rehab romance and not a good idea

“I know I shouldn’t be in a relationship that’s why we’re just hooking up” – this is probably just as bad of an idea as an actual rehab romance, because someone is bound to get hurt or you’re going to end up in a relationship even if you start out just hooking up; it’s the codependency in all of us

“Wanna go to a meeting then get coffee?” – a typical Friday or Saturday night in recovery

“I hate this town/I want to get out of Delray” – self-explanatory; probably uttered by someone looking to go back on a run and using being unhappy in Delray (or any town) as an excuse to go back out

“Which halfway house do you live in?” – ice breaker/pick up line for those in early recovery

“Where did you go to treatment?” – yet another ice breaker/pick up line

“I just got a job in a call center” – typical early recovery job; it’s no wonder that the area is saturated with call centers

“I want to work at a rehab one day” – newly clean and inspired folk often have dreams to go into the field to give back and “keep it green”

“I hate having a curfew” – lots of people in Delray are living in halfway houses and so they have to abide by certain rules such as having a curfew. With so many places around Atlantic Ave that stay open so late, it’s kind of a bummer to have to be home when the rest of the world is still out and about.

“My sponsor said………” – self-explanatory

“Are you going to crossroads/central house today?” – or “what meeting are you hitting tonight?”

“I need a redbull” – drink of choice for those in recovery

“I can’t believe my parents did this to me” – complaining about being sent to SUNNY SOUTH FLORIDA to get clean…really?!

“I used to shoot 10000000 bags in one shot” – it’s common to hear someone brag about and over exaggerate their drug use

“I can’t wait to get my car down here” – walking, taking the bus, and riding your bike become your main forms of transportation; that or you get a scooter to get around

“Do you have an extra cig” – bumming cigarettes is a common occurrence, especially when paying rent to your halfway house, it’s quite often the case that we can’t even seem to afford cigarettes
