Oscar De La Hoya, the president of powerhouse boxing promotion company Golden Boy Promotions and a former 10-time world title winner, has returned to rehab to address his substance abuse problem.
The former boxer issued a statement Tuesday saying he voluntarily admitted himself to an unnamed facility. The move comes on the eve of the biggest fight of the year for his promotion company Saturday night when Floyd Mayweather Jr. takes on Canelo Alvarez.
In a statement, De La Hoya said, “Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is in the ring and mine in treatment. I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself to a treatment facility.
“I explained this to Canelo, and he understood that my health and long-term recovery from my disease must come first. Thank you for your understanding. I ask for your support during this difficult time and for me and my family.”
Although De La Hoya, 40, did not specify what substance he was using, he is an admitted alcoholic and has said he has abused cocaine in the past.
De La Hoya first confessed two years ago that he was an alcoholic and drug user and had been in treatment. He told the Los Angeles Times last month that he sometimes attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings six days a week, but had slipped at times in his treatment.
“The fight life, that was easy,” he told the paper. “This is a battle I have every day.”
