Ben Affleck Back in Rehab after Ex Stages Intervention

Back in March of 2017, Academy Award-winning actor, screenwriter, and producer Ben Affleck had made a powerful public statement about completing alcohol addiction treatment. After years of on-and-off struggles with his alcoholism, it seemed that the Batman actor was on his way to a strong recovery. However, sadly Affleck, 46, has found himself in rehab again this week.

Earlier this week, photos of Ben Affleck surfaced where he is seen receiving a shipment of what appears to be bottles of beer and a brown paper bag at his home in Pacific Palisades. While it shows Affleck receiving the alcohol delivery, it was not confirmed if the bottles were for him or someone else in his home. Either way, it is now safe to assume that the temptation of the bottle and the personal struggles the actor has been facing lately have taken a toll.

Soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Garner and Affleck are still in the midst of a drawn-out divorce process, and this Wednesday, things took a tragic turn when Garner, 46, was spotted with another woman taking Ben Affleck to treatment again after staging an intervention.

Ben Affleck Struggling at Home

Affleck has sought rehab twice for his alcohol addiction issues and is an advocate for the impact of attending 12 Step meeting during his periods of sobriety. Sources close to Affleck have admitted in the past sobriety has been a constant struggle for the “Good Will Hunting” star, and the seemingly constant inconsistencies of his personal life probably haven’t helped.

Recently, Ben broke up with longtime girlfriend Lindsay Shookus, 38, an Emmy Award-winning producer who has worked for years on Saturday Night Live. Sources say the two had to call it quits because the long-distance nature of the relationship just did not work. Ben Affleck himself lives in L.A. close to Garner and their children. Shookus lives in New York. The two had gone public with their relationship in July of 2017, but recently the two have parted ways and Ben has been spotted with 22-year-old Playboy model Shauna Sexton. Still, those close to Affleck state:

“He’s having a tough time. It’s unclear what his relationship is with Lindsay and he still has his relationship with Jen. It’s not easy and he’s struggled with staying on a straight path before.”

So, a lot of voices have been saying Affleck’s been having a difficult time adjusting to all of the changes in his private life. And the pain he is suffering shows. Photos of Jennifer Garner and friend stopping at Jack in the Box to pick up a meal for a sweating and puffy-faced Ben Affleck on the way to treatment show things have not been particularly easy for him.

Hopefully, the Batman actor can soon bounce back. According to early reports on the story, Ben did not need much convincing from Garner to get on board with getting help. After being down this road together before, it seems Affleck knows when he needs help and is willing to get it.

Can Batman Bounce Back?

We can at least keep the hope alive that Ben Affleck can make an even stronger recovery after what is expected to be an extended stay in rehab. We have seen him hit bottom and bounce back before. In 2017, after leaving treatment for alcohol addiction, Affleck made a statement saying:

“I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.”

We can also see the progression of alcoholism with Ben Affleck. Back in 2001, he went to rehab, but when he got out it had seemed he wasn’t taking the whole thing all that seriously. In 2012, he talked about leaving that 30-day residential treatment program years earlier. Looking at his comments, you can surmise that he was not all too convinced that he had a serious drinking problem:

“I went to rehab for being 29 and partying too much and not having a lot of boundaries and to clear my head and try to get some idea of who I wanted to be.”

Compared to the statement he made after his second stint in rehab, it would seem he had learned quite a bit about himself over the years. If we are to judge by these latest developments and the paparazzi photos, his drinking habits have progressed like any other alcoholics.

But anyone who knows intimately about alcoholism and recovery can tell you that desperation can be the greatest gift for an alcoholic. As sad as it is to see someone relapse, maybe that is what it would take for the star of “The Town” to take even more action in protecting his sobriety. Apparently, sources close to Affleck say he knew he needed help, and was vocal about it.

For months now there have been rumors back and forth about whether the actor will be returning to play Batman in future films. While some reports insist that he is working with director Matt Reeves on “The Batman”, many are wondering if Affleck’s trip to live-in treatment will have any impact on his future with the DC film franchise. Only time will tell on that front.

Either way, we are definitely cheering for Ben Affleck to have a strong and meaningful recovery.
