Casual Illegal Drug Use, Victimless Crime?

It is an unfortunate reality that many casual illegal drug users see their act as a “Victimless Crime”; when quite the contrary is true.  In the countries where the illegal drugs are harvested and/or manufactured, violence, intimidation, and murder are a way of life.  Sadly, this violence spreads beyond the cartels and into the local communities.

The violence is only compounded when the drugs reach their markets and the street level dealers.  From the gang activity which feeds on the drug revenue, to the crimes committed for the money with which to buy the drugs, illegal drug use is far from a victimless crime.

Another sad reality is the amount of financial resources that are devoted to dealing with the drug trade, resources that could be better used elsewhere.  Unfortunately, the demand for these illegal drugs is what fuels the supply, which leads to a self sustaining cycle of violence and misery through the course of supply and demand.

And finally, those using the drugs are victims; opening themselves up to potential health, financial, and legal problems, the ramifications of which will be felt by those closest to the individual.  Casual Illegal drug use is not a victimless crime; it is a crime that destroys communities, families, and lives.
